Hanzlik Hands On Grant Awarded To Joyce Bell, Cordley Elementary
Joyce Bell, the librarian at Cordley Elementary school, was awarded a 2017 Hanzlik Hands On Academy Teacher Grant Friday.
Bell’s project title – Bridge Building – will benefit students in kindergarten through fifth grade at the school. Bell instituted a Library Innovation Time (LIT) for students who come to the library to do self-directed and teacher-guided activities. The LIT activities allow them to think creatively as they design, problem solve and build items individually or in small groups.
This $1,100 grant will cover the cost of materials for these activities. The requested bridge building materials will allow students to move beyond learning about bridges to actually designing and testing bridges.
The Hanzlik Hands On Academy Teacher Grants were established by Robert and Lois Hanzlik to support elementary teachers who will instruct or expose kids to the areas of design and build activities to incorporate a hands-on learning experience within their classroom curriculum for areas such as physics, math and science through a Maker Space in connection with the Lawrence College and Career Center.
The Hanzliks also announced that last year’s recipient, Tyler Gill from Hillcrest, will have his grant renewed.
