LSF Receives Two Grants From Douglas County Community Foundation
The Lawrence Schools Foundation was a recipient of two grants from the Douglas County Community Foundation it was announced recently. The grants total nearly $8,000 and will benefit secondary students in the Lawrence Public Schools.
A $5,943 Community Grant was presented to the Foundation to provide 30 hotspot devices and connectivity for secondary school students. Students at the middle schools and high schools will be able to check out the devices to connect to the internet away from school. With an increasing amount of school work content delivered online or requiring on-line access, this service will provide opportunities for students to continue learning at home.
“The Lawrence Schools Foundation is very excited and honored to receive these grants,” said Dena Johnston, Executive Director of the Foundation. “We understand that providing the necessary tools to students is key in helping them complete their educational goals. We recognize that not all students have access to broadband internet at home, putting them at a serious disadvantage at school, in applying for jobs, and so much more. Whether you’re a parent looking for a job, a child working on a school project, or a family looking for information on services, broadband access is no longer a luxury – it’s a necessity.”
The second grant is from the DCCF’s Special Educational Grants for Emergency Resources (SEGER) Fund. This privately-funded program was established to support an annual fund in the amount of $1,000 each for Lawrence and Free State High School social workers to use for students in need.
“With the support of the SEGER Fund grant, the foundation will be able to deepen the network of support inside and outside the classroom for our students and families throughout the year,” Johnston said.
The Lawrence Schools Foundation is a charitable organization that supports education enrichment in the Lawrence Public Schools.
