About LHS Journalism & Mrs. Tholen

I spent 10 years working as a newspaper reporter, but made the jump to teaching in 2010. I got my start in journalism as a member of my high school yearbook staff. I’m excited when my students decide to pursue careers in journalism/communications, as I did. Even if they go into another field, I believe anyone can benefit from the scholastic journalism experience. Students have the unique opportunity to make meaningful decisions, learn about their school and create products to be enjoyed by the entire student body. Plus students get the opportunity to earn scholarships and the prestige of being part of program that has been recognized in the state and nationally.

Students in the journalism program are dedicated, having won a newspaper Pacemaker in 2017 and also being finalists for the yearbook Pacemaker that same year. In the past five years, they have once won the state journalism contest and twice finished second.

I previously served on the boards for the Kansas Scholastic Press Association and the Journalism Educators of Metropolitan Kansas City. I received the Sunflower Award for new advisers in 2013 from the Kansas Scholastic Press Association and was a JEA Rising Star honoree in 2016.
