What is a Montessori education?

While learning through exploration and hands-on experiences, the Montessori philosophy is one of respect for the child, peace, movement, and intrinsic motivation in a prepared environment that fosters meaningful learning. 

What does the learning look like?

Each child is purposefully engaged in work of their choice after a lesson has been given. These lessons are selected by the teacher based on the interest and readiness of each student. Education is often integrated in a cross-curricular way. The child is encouraged to discover their own interests and foster their love of learning.

What is the role of the teacher?

Teachers, also known as guides, present lessons in sequential order following a carefully structured path of learning. Teachers allow students the freedom and responsibility to practice concrete concepts. Guides foster a love of learning through consistent expectations and an intentional framework in the prepared environment.

What does the environment look like?

Montessori furnishings are designed for children and scaled to their size. All materials are easily within students' reach. Natural, real, and beautiful materials are utilized. Environments are filled with art work, natural lighting, plants, and delicate materials to promote a sense of pride within their space.

Why have a multiage environment?

The Montessori method uses mixed age groups in an environment where students are inspired and mentored by one another. These educational cycles last three years and are based on the four planes of development. These years together, together strengthen the relationship between they environment, teachers, and peers, fostering a solid community.

The Five Areas of the Environment

Practical Life

The development of skills that the child will use in their daily lives: fine motor, concentration, and functional independence in activities such as cleaning and food preparation.

Sensorial

Refining the child's senses: sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste, the materials are designed to help children process sensory input and aid in understanding the world around them.

Mathematics

Montessori math is designed to provide students with concrete experiences of abstract concepts. This experience with tangible materials allows for growth beyond typical expectations.

Language

Children are immersed in a language-rich environment with a foundation of spoken language supported by the introduction to sounds, the mechanics of writing, and an eventual language explosion.

Culture

A Montessori education incorporates science, history, music, art, and geography, exposing children to social responsibilities, their community, and the ever-changing world around them.
