Julie Battaglia
This is my 20th year of teaching. All but 1 have been in Lawrence Public Schools. I currently hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with an emphasis in Botany and a minor in Chemistry and a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership. I have had a lot of experience in the science field. I have been a garden coordinator for a non-profit organization in Denver, Colorado where I managed an organic farm and over thirty school gardens. At the same time I worked for a second non-profit organization called "Embracing Horses" in Denver, Colorado where I took care of over 25 horses and helped with the inner-city horseback riding program. For several years, I have volunteered with veterinarians in Colorado as well as Kansas. In addition, I previously sat on the Instutute of Animal Care and Use Committee at the University of Kansas. It is a joy to be able to put my love of plants and animals together through teaching Biology.
On a more personal note, I live in Lawrence and am within walking distance of LHS. I am married and my husband works at the Spencer Museum of Art. I have 4 children, one who attends Lawrence Public Schools, 2 who graduated from LHS and 1 who graduated from Free State High School. Did I mention I love animals? I have a cat, a gecko, and 2 dogs plus lots of fish. When I'm not working, I love to run, lift weights, walk my dogs at the Baker Wetlands, and travel.
