Welcome to Parents as Teachers!

  • Being a parent is a unique journey for each family - and possibly the most important and rewarding job you will ever have. Parents as Teachers is here to support you by providing evidence based services to help you understand each stage of your child's growth and development. After all, you are your child's first and most important teacher!

     Beginning July 1, 2016, families must qualify for Parents as Teachers by meeting at least one of the below criteria:

    • Speak a langauge other than English in the home
    • Moved to the United States within the past 5 years
    • Have twins or triplets
    • Child born with very low birth weight (under 1500 grams or 3.3 pounds)
    • Military family (currently deployed or within two years of returning form a deployment)
    • Teen Parent (under 20 years old)
    • Child with disabilities or chronic health condition (such as working with tiny k)
    • Child at risk for a developmental delay (If you are concerned your child might be at rish for a developmental delay, please contact the program coordinator at 330-1651 to discuss screening options)
    • Parent with disabilities or chronic health condition
    • Parent with mental illness (anxiety, depression, bipolar, etc)
    • Low education (did not complete high school or GED and is not currently enrolled)
    • Low income (WIC, free or reduced lunch, Medicaid, public housing, child care assistance, food assistance, TANF, etc)
    • Substance abuse (parent is or has used substances any time during child's life, including prenatal)
    • Child in foster care of have a court-appointed legal guardian
    • Child abuse or neglect (suspected or substantited)
    • Homeless or unstable housing
    • Incarcerated parent (within the last year)
    • Death in the immediate family (death of a child, sibling, parent)
    • Domestic violence

What is Parents as Teachers?

  • Parents as Teachers is a FUN and FREE early childhood education program available to anyone who is pregnant or has a child under the age of 3 and lives within the USD 497 school district. 


    It is designed to give children the best possible start in life and to prepare them for school success by supporting parents in their role as their children's first and most influential teachers.


    The Lawrence Parents as Teachers is an Affiliate program of the Parents as Teachers National Center, which uses an evidence-based curriculum infused with the most current neuroscience research to support child development and parent education.
