In-District Transfer Requests

Families who reside within the Lawrence Public Schools district and would like to request a school outside of their assigned attendance area can submit a Transfer Request. Requests for the 2026–2027 school year will be accepted from February 2 through April 30, 2026. (We have extended the deadline through May 30th).

After May 30:

After the deadline, transfer requests will only be accepted for:

Families who move out of their child’s school boundary and want to request that their child continue attending their current school.

What Happens Next?

Requests submitted on or before May 30, 2026 will be considered.
Schools will review requests in June, after student enrollment and staffing numbers have been finalized. This process determines how many transfer openings may be available at each school.
Parents and guardians will be notified of decisions by email no later than July 1, 2026.
If approved, transportation will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

If you missed the deadline for the 2026-2027 school year, you may submit a request starting in February for the 2027-2028 school year.

Lawrence Virtual School Transfer

Students currently enrolled in USD 497 who wish to transfer to Lawrence Virtual School (LVS), OR wish to return from LVS to their Lawrence Public Schools boundary school, click the link below to complete the Lawrence Virtual School Transfer Request Form.

If you would also like to submit a request for your child to attend a school outside of your child's school boundary, you would complete that request by clicking the link above after you complete the LVS Form. That means you will need to complete both forms.

Important Information About In District Transfer Requests

School assignments are based on the residential address of the legal guardian with whom the student resides.

School transfer decisions are based on such factors as available classroom spaces and code of conduct issues, which include attendance. Transfer requests may be communicated to each school’s administrative office before a final decision. Decisions and notifications regarding transfers may not be made until after the August enrollment/registration period is completed. On occasion, buildings may be closed to all incoming transfer requests from students outside the assigned attendance area.

The approval of a transfer at one educational level does not set a precedent for the next level. A new transfer request must be submitted for each educational level (elementary, middle school, high school). Siblings of students attending a school on a transfer request are not guaranteed approval to attend the same school. They must apply separately and are subject to the same stipulations as all other transfer requests. The district does not provide transportation for students attending a school outside of their attendance area on a transfer.

After the deadline of April 30, only families who have recently moved out of their child's school boundary, and wish to request that their child(ren) remain at their current school, may complete a Transfer Request Form during the school year.
