Student's Place of Residency

Residency in the Lawrence school district is determined by the place of residence of the student. That place of residence also determines the school attendance site for the student. In most situations, the place of residence is the residence of the legal guardian. In some instances, however, the student may be residing with an adult other than his or her legal guardian.

When a student is residing with an adult other than a legal guardian, the legal guardian must submit a notarized statement attesting:
  • where the student is residing and that the student is residing in that household on a full-time basis;
  • the adult person in that household, where the student is residing, is providing the major financial support of this student; and
  • the adult person is assuming responsibility for all school-related matters concerning this student.
The adult of residency with whom the student is residing must sign an Affidavit of Residency attesting:
  • the student is residing in that household on a full-time basis;
  • they are the adult person in that household and will be providing the major financial, legal and medical support of this student; and
  • the adult person is assuming responsibility for all school-related matters concerning this student.

Signing the Affidavit of Residency does not change legal guardianship. It does, however, permit the student to enroll in the school serving the address of the adult signing the affidavit. Access to the student's records still remains the right of the legal guardian. Students who are residing with someone other than a legal guardian and are seeking enrollment should contact the Business and Operations Office in the Enrollment Center at 110 McDonald Drive. You may call 785/832-5000 with questions or for assistance.
