Mrs. Emily Hess

Hello Bobcats!

I'm so excited to be back at Langston Hughes full time. I look forward to working with ALL students here as they participate in the PE program!

I am from nearby Baldwin City where my love for an active life started. As far back as I can remember, I've always been involved in some kind of sporting event. Whether it was the tractor pull or bicycle race at the annual Vinland Fair or competitive volleyball, basketball, track & field, soccer or softball; you name it, I was there. I come from a large family of educators and coaches and am one of four kids-so growing up in my family was always active and fun!

I played volleyball at the University of Kansas while I studied Health & Physical Education. I enjoyed both the competitive aspect of Division I volleyball, as well as the overall health and fitness education I received in the classroom. I was fortunate to continue my volleyball career internationally for 8 years spanning 5 different countries. I'm looking forward to passing along the passion, knowledge and importance of a healthy lifestyle I've gained from my time at KU as well as my experiences abroad.

I have several past teaching experiences in different classrooms and gyms ranging from middle school health and nutrition and PE, to high school human growth and development and career exploration, that have helped gain perspective on the overall student and overall health of our youth. I believe this background was invaluable to me as I begin here at Langston Hughes. Setting a positive foundation for a student's overall wellbeing is key to their future!

My goals as a future educator not only include passing along valuable knowledge in the health/fitness world, but to instill these behaviors into lifestyle habits. Above all else, my hope is to be a positive role model to our youth by inspiring them to pursue positive lifelong behaviors as well as empowering them to become high functioning members of society once beyond my classroom.
