This is my twelfth year teaching high school ELA, but it is my second year here at Free State High School.  For the 2022-23 school year, I'm teaching two sections of ELA 9 and four of Advanced ELA 10. Both ELA 9 sections are co-taught alongside Mr. Jacob Larson.

For ELA 9 and Advanced ELA 10, Google Classroom will be the best way to keep tabs on both what's going on day-to-day and current assignments. Parents/ guardians are encouraged to sign-up for Google Classroom as such—this can be done via a request from your student or from the classroom instructor. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

The reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills developed in ELA 9 and Advanced ELA 10 aim to strengthen students' abilities to be independent, self-directed learners.  Independent learners are able to assess the intentions of a writer or speaker by critiquing both their artistic expression and ideas.  Self-directed learners utilize tools for decoding and responding that allow them to pursue their own deeper understanding of the world we share.

Every independent, self-directed learner is an empowered person. The goal is for every student to leave the classroom each day a more empowered person.
