Mr. Jacob Lewis

Hey there all of you amazing Parents and Students!

I know that you are curious to know more about your Art Teacher, so I decided to include some info about me in this box!

I have always had a passion for Art and Art History, so after I graduated from Wellsville High School in 2000, I went on to take just about every art class that Johnson County Community College had to offer!  I sampled all of the wonderful ways artists can express themselves - Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Photography, and yes... even Acting!

After I graduated from JCCC, I moved to Lawrence in 2007 and started working for Lawrence Public Schools as a para-educator.  I worked for the C-TRAN, LHS, and FSHS Work Experience Program, supporting students with disabilities at various job sites around the community.  During this time, I developed a love for the learning process and in 2010 I decided to go back to school to become a certified teacher.

I was accepted to Washburn University that Fall, and once again I was engaged in the world of Art.  I took all sorts of classes that helped me improve my art skills and help focus my ability to express myself.  I also immersed myself in Education and became more comfortable in the classroom through observations and opportunities to practice being a teacher.  In 2012 I was lucky enough to participate in a study abroad program in the Central American country of Belize.  While in Belize, I interacted with and taught art lessons to young people in a couple of orphanages, and I taught one lesson to first graders on Caye Caulker, an island off the coast!  This experience opened my eyes to the challenges teachers face, such as language barriers, cultural differences, and the "Digital Divide".

When I returned from my study abroad program, I began student teaching.  One of my student teaching placements was here in Lawrence at Deerfield Elementary, where I developed a deep connection with art education for youngsters.  I also had the good fortune to student teach at Jeff West High School in Meriden, Kansas, just outside of Topeka.  Once my student teaching was complete, and I graduated from Washburn, I was lucky enough to become an Elementary Art Teacher here in Lawrence!  For the first three years I taught at Broken Arrow and New York Elementary schools, but last year I was moved from New York to Pinckney.

This is my fifth year as an Art Teacher, and I'm happy to say that I am still at Broken Arrow and Pinckney!  I am super excited to be your Art Teacher this year, or the Art Teacher for your kiddos!  Please feel free to contact me through email, PowerSchool, or by phone if you have questions or comments!
