Mrs. Shari Flakus

Welcome to AVID and Electronic Media at Billy Mills Middle School.  I have been teaching since 1996 and have taught at Billy Mills (formerly South) since 1997.  I was born in Minnesota  and moved to Newton, KS in 1983.  I graduated from Kansas State University in 1996 and earned my Masters in Education from the University of Kansas in 2000.  Additionally, I have 60 condiuing education credits from Baker University.

In Electronic Media, It is my hope that students will gain knowledge in both photography and cinematography.  I received a grant from the Lawrence Schools Foundation, which privided DSLR cameras. This is a hands-on class that is project based. This is a semester course offered to 8th graders.

In AVID, students will learn organizational skills and a variety of strategies that will help them be successful in school, with a goal of entering college with the tools they need for academic excellence.  College field trips, the use of a binder and tutorial sessions are included in the curriculum. AVID is offered to 7th and 8th graders.  Students must apply in the spring in order to be considered for the program.
