I began the road to LVS in August, 1974, when I left New York and moved to Manhattan, Kansas, to attend Kansas State University as a track and field student-athlete. I married a fellow Wildcat from the tiny town of Deerfield, Kansas in 1976, and Jesus and I moved to Macomb, Illinois where he taught at Western Illinois University. In 1977 our daughter Nicaela was born.  The opportunity for my husband to return to his hometown area saw us move to Garden City in 1979—and the following year our son Jesus was born.  I started out my career in education running a Chapter One Reading Lab at Buffalo Jones Elementary School in Garden City. I became a stay at home mom in 1984 when our daughter Julia was born but when the last of the Hernandez clan entered kindergarten I completed my degree and graduated in December of 1990. I completed a long term substitute teaching assignment in 8th grade Reading Remediation from December through May 1991 and I started teaching middle school social studies and reading the following August.  In 2000 we moved to Salina, Kansas where I taught middle school social studies.

In 2004 my oldest daughter heard about a wonderful new virtual school that was about to open its doors and asked me to “check it out” before she enrolled our granddaughter.  It did sound too good to be true, but after visiting with the administrator I realized that I wanted to be part of such an exciting new venture and have not looked back since.  When I was a classroom teacher I always thought that there needed to be an option that filled the void between brick and mortar and totally independent homeschooling and I love the fact that Lawrence Virtual School is that option. I am passionate about helping students to develop, or regain, a love of reading and feel truly blessed to be given a chance to do that every day.
