Degrees and Certifications:
My name is Holden Kraus and this will be my ninth year of teaching 8th grade Maths at West Middle School! I hope you find everything you’d like to know about me in here somewhere. :)
I was born and raised in the little town of Quenemo, Kansas. I’m one of 8 children from a mixed family. I went to Marais des Cygnes Valley Schools from Kindergarten through graduation from MdCV High School in 2006. During high school, I was active in every club available and several sports including FFA (Future Farmers of America), FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), FCCLA (Future Career and Community Leaders of America), NHS (National Honors Society), Scholar’s Bowl, Football (manager all 4 years), Basketball, and Track (off and on).
After graduation, I became a Pitt State Gorilla at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. GO-‘RILLAS! I started my studies in Mathematics Education at the secondary level with the Mathematics Department. Along the way, I picked up minors in Accounting and Psychology and interests in several more departments. As a Gorilla, I also participated in several campus organizations including Advancement Ambassadors (public student face for Alumni events), Kappa Mu Epsilon Math Honors Society (serving as President for my final year and presenting research at a National Convention), and serving as a founding member of the Pitt State Gay Straight Alliance (President for two years).
During the final year of my undergraduate degree, I was lucky enough to be chosen as a Math Graduate Teaching Assistant for the following year so I continued my studies at PSU and graduated with my Masters degree in Mathematics in 2012.
After graduating with my second degree, I was lucky enough to be asked to interview at West where I was happy to accept the position.
This fall, I am continuing my doctoral studies at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Mathematics. I have finished my coursework and am in the process of writing my dissertation proposal to implement my study in the Fall of 2021.
In addition to teaching, committees, and my own studies, I also sing with the Heartland Men's Chorus in Kansas City as a Upper Tenor 2. This requires weekly rehearsals on Tuesday nights from 7 - 10pm and we do 3 concerts a year! I also do my personal activism with GLSEN and serve as the Professional Development Coordinator for GLSEN Kansas. One might say that I like to stay busy!
I have found my “home” at WMS and the staff have become like family to me. I serve as the faculty sponsor for the SAGAA, on the Building Leadership Team, the Building and District Technology Committees, and the LGBT+ Staff Advisory Team. I enjoy going to extra-curricular activities and watching our students succeed in their endeavors so you’ll probably see me around – Please don’t hesitate to say hello!
I look forward to another year at West and the challenges that present themselves and I hope you’ll play an active role in your year with me.
