Mrs. Valerie Lanius
Hello! Welcome to my page. I am the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) at Woodlawn and West Middle School. My passion in life is working to improve all aspects of communication for students. If you have any questions or concerns about speech and language related topics please feel free to call or e-mail me. These topics may include: speech articulation (the accuracy of sounds in speech), speech dysfluency (stuttering and other types of disruptions in the flow of speech), voice (the sound quality of speech), receptive language (the way the brain processes incoming messages), and expressive language (the communicative output). If your child has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Student Improvement Plan (SIP) he or she may receive specialized speech/language interventions. These interventions are tailored to the specific needs of your child. If your child does not have an IEP or SIP but you have concerns about areas involving speech and/or language, give me a call so we can discuss the evaluation process.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to receive my bachelor's and master's degrees from KU's respected and competitive SLP training program. As a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA), I continue to take classes every year to keep updated on the latest intervention methods and research findings. If you have a question, give me a call and if I don't know the answer I will try to find it for you. Also, you can check out the ASHA website at asha.org and search a topic to find evidence-based, peer-reviewed information on speech and language related topics.
