    Parents' Right to Know
    Every Student Succeeds Act

    According to the latest reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires that all schools receiving Title I funds inform parents of their right to inquire about the qualifications of their children's teachers and the qualifications of any paraprofessional serving their child.

    Your child attends a school that receives federal Title I funds. You have the right to request the following information, which will be provided to you in a timely manner upon request:
    Professional qualifications include:

    • The teacher has met Kansas licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas they are teaching;

    • If Kansas has decided that the teacher may teach in a classroom without a license or being qualified according to state regulations due to special circumstances;

    • The teacher's college major; whether the educator has advanced degrees and, if so, the subject of those degrees;

    • If any paraprofessional educator is providing services to your child and, if so, their qualifications.

    As a parent, you will be notified if your child is taught by a "non-highly qualified" teacher for four consecutive weeks or more.

    If you would like this information for your child's classroom teachers and paraprofessionals, please contact Megan Epperson, Human Resources Assistant Principal, or Kristen Ryan, Executive Director of Human Resources for Lawrence Public Schools (785-832-5000).

    Our teachers are committed to helping your child develop the academic knowledge and critical thinking skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. I encourage you to support your child's education and communicate with their teacher regularly. By partnering together, families and educators can provide your child with the best possible education. Because we believe in the power of a strong partnership between parents/caregivers and our school, we ask that each family read and sign our Family-School Learning Compact. You will be offered the opportunity to complete this compact during beginning of the year school activities.

    As a parent, you have the right to request your child's state assessment scores. You have the right to obtain the state report cards from the school and school district. This will be available on the district website once it is available in the state.
