About Mrs. Stahl and 5th Grade

Welcome to 5th Grade! This school year will mark my 9th year of teaching and my 6th year as a fifth grade teacher! Before working in Lawrence, I worked in Topeka as a third and fourth grade teacher.

Fifth Grade is full of fun ideas for students to explore! I think you will have a blast with what we have planned. We will learn about Earth's Systems and Life Sciences, as well as Mixtures and Solutions (a little chemistry fun!) and Space! We will also cover important Health topics, including disease and keeping healthy, and will grow food in our garden (which you might even eat at lunch!). You will also learn about North American history from the year 1000 to 1800 (whew! That's a lot to learn!). Social Studies topics include the migration of Native peoples, explorers, geography, government, and economics. Your favorite subjects of math and reading will be a big part of each day, and you will have an opportunity to become amazing writers during Writer's Workshop (remember, your teacher secretly loves this topic).

Your 5th-Grade teachers are hard at work planning field trips for you, including a nature trip exploring water systems at Clinton Lake, as well as a trip to the Spencer Art Museum on KU's campus, and - last, but not least - our traditional fun activity at the end of the year. In the past, this has been the ski trip but times are changing and it is time to start a new tradition. I am hoping the students will help us create this new tradtion that we can follow for years to come.

At the end of the year, you will be recognized in three ways as you make your way to middle school. First, you will have a picnic at Centennial Park. Then, you will participate in a graduation ceremony where all students are recognized. And finally, each class will prepare a farewell show for an all-school assembly (this will replace our annual Talent Show).
