6th Grade Science Teacher
Hello, Mustangs! I'm Laura Burris, and I teach sixth grade science. I graduated from Emporia State University in December 2019 with a bachelor of science in elementary education (K-6). I also have endorsements in middle school science and ELA. Before becoming a teacher I was a paraeducator with the Early Childhood Program at Kennedy Elementary. I've also worked for Hilltop Child Development Center as an aide and for Lawrence Parks & Rec as a camp counselor, so I hope to see many familiar faces!
I've lived in Lawrence since 2009, but I grew up around Pittsburgh, PA, and spent a few years outside Minneapolis, MN. I got married in 2017 to my husband Carl. He grew up in Lawrence and attended LMCMS himself back when it was known as Central Junior High! We have two orange tabby cats, Jethro and Wicket, and a crested gecko named Yiddle who lives at school during the year!
What I love about teaching are the communities we create with each class of students. We come together in August as a group of strangers, but by the time school is over in May, we've built a classroom "family". Especially with sixth graders, my goal is to send them on to seventh grade with the understanding that they will look out for one another.
