Eligibility for Special Education

Students must meet two criteria in order to receive special education services:

  1. Does the student have an exceptionality (disability or giftedness)?

  2. Does the student need specially designed instruction in order to benefit from the general education curriculum?

The evaluation process in each building is utilized to answer these questions. The evaluation team—comprised of parents/guardians and educators—is required to review data from a variety of sources, such as general education interventions, early childhood screenings, record reviews, interviews, observations and/or tests.

Parents/guardians are given a copy of an evaluation report that documents the team’s decision regarding eligibility and the reasons for that decision. If the student is determined eligible and in need of special education services, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed and special education will begin.
