Thank you for your interest in nonresident enrollment in Lawrence Public Schools.
In 2022, the Kansas Legislature passed a law requiring all school districts in the state to have a policy allowing for students living outside their district boundaries to attend their schools, if there is available capacity. The Lawrence Board of Education approved Policy JBCC Enrollment of Nonresident Students and determined capacities and open seats for nonresident students based on student enrollment, staffing, and student-teacher ratios.
The goal of the district is to maintain a student-teacher ratio that maximizes student learning and available staffing given our financial resources.
Applying for Nonresident Enrollment:
Our district will accept applications (Requests for Transfer) from nonresident or out-of-district students during the month of June. If the number of nonresident students applying is within the capacity available, all applicants will be admitted. If the number of applications exceeds the capacity, the district will randomly select nonresident applicants via a lottery process on or before July 01 of each year.
Per statute, priority is given to military students, students in the custody of the Department of Children and Families, and siblings of students already accepted or attending our schools, as long as there is available capacity for those siblings. Once a student has been accepted, they may remain enrolled in Lawrence Public Schools until graduation, provided they meet attendance and behavioral expectations specified in Board Policy, and as outlined in statute.
Nonresident applicants will be notified of the status of their application by July 15 each year.
