In an effort to strike a balance between Lawrence Public Schools' desire to host graduations to celebrate the Class of 2020 and concerns with the increased community spread of COVID-19, the district announces a modified plan for Saturday's ceremonies that seeks to mitigate contact as much as possible. Both high schools will stagger the arrival and dismissal of their graduates and their families, who are invited to walk into the stadiums, receive their diplomas, take photographs, and exit the stadiums and campuses.
All of the previously announced safety measures, including ticketing, social distancing, and the wearing of masks are required.
Anyone at high risk of infection, experiencing COVID symptoms/testing positive for COVID, having been exposed to someone exhibiting COVID symptoms/testing positive for COVID, or having traveled to an identified "hot spot" should not attend graduation.
Both high schools will announce specific details for their graduates, families, and staff. See the school websites and school social media accounts for more information.
Lawrence High School's Graduation has been moved from the morning of Saturday, July 18, to 7:00 that night. This will provide time between the two high school graduations to accommodate the technical setup needed for MidcoSN's livestream and broadcast of the ceremonies. Free State High's Graduation is at 8 a.m. July 18.
The district appreciates this MidcoSN service. It will enable more family and friends to enjoy our celebrations of the Class of 2020. Both ceremonies will be broadcast live on MidcoSN (Midco cable channels 622 & 32) and the official MidcoSN Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/MidcoSNKansas/. Additionally, DVDs of each ceremony will be available for purchase on the Midco website at https://kansas.midcosn.com/schedule/order-dvds/.
USD 497 has been in constant communication with Lawrence Douglas County Public Health during the pandemic. The administration discussed our graduation plans with Douglas County's Health Officer. The health and safety of our school community will always be our top priority!
Our graduation venues are outdoors. Through a ticketing system, we are limiting attendance to less than half the stadiums' capacities. We will observe six feet of physical distancing in seating for students, staff, and guests. All who attend will be required to wear masks. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Graduates and their families should read the important information about the ceremonies posted on the high school websites.
We look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of the Class of 2020!
