Ms. Julie Schwarting

This is my 10th year teaching science at FSHS!  Currently I teach freshmen Biology, Environmental Science and AP Environmental Science. I sponsor Hacky Sack club, Free State Environmental Club and co-sponsor Ascent, a dynamic organization devoted to encouraging students from underrepresented groups to engage in STEM.  Over the past seven years I've collaborated with KU researchers to create a Free State Prairie Restoration experiment on campus which has created many opportunities for Free State students to engage in authentic research alongside KU professors and students.  This summer I continued working with students to research, design, and propose the construction of a Permaculture Garden on campus.  Ultimately, I strive to connect students with the resources in their community, implement authentic Project Based Learning, and empower students to understand and utilize scientific evidence to make positive changes in their world.
