Dr. Dwayne Dunn

Dwayne Dunn became the Director of Choral Activities for Lawrence High School in 2011 after most recently teaching choir for 11 years at Olathe East High School.  He previously spent seven years teaching choral music in Grand Prairie and Harlingen, Texas public schools, and served for five years on the music education faculty at the University of Arizona.  His choirs have performed at several state and national music conferences and have received superior ratings and "Best in Class" awards at festivals in Dallas, Ft. Worth, San Antonio, and northeast Kansas.  Choirs under his direction have performed on tour in Arizona, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas, Wisconsin, as well as Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal in Canada and concerts in Hallstadt and Linz, Austria.  In addition, Dr. Dunn has conducted honor choirs in Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, Louisiana, and Texas.

Dr. Dunn holds degrees in music education and choral conducting from Texas Christian University, Texas State University, and Louisiana State University, and is currently the President-Elect for the Kansas Choral Directors Association.  With research interests in teacher effectiveness and student conceptual transfer, Dr. Dunn has presented his research at conferences across the United States and been published in the Journal for Research in Music EducationChoral JournalSoutheastern Journal of Music EducationUpdate: The Applications of Research in Music Education, and was a contributor to The Choral Director’s Cookbook.  The Kansas Music Educators Association honored him with the title of Kansas Music Teacher of the Year for 2011.  He enjoys mentoring student teachers, and has worked with more than 40 during his career, many of whom are successful music educators across the country.  He maintains an active schedule as a teacher, researcher, choral clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor.  His wife, Cindy, and children Bryce, Cuyler, and Cassidy also keep him active, as does being “Grandpa” for his two granddaughters, Katie and Kamryn by his daughter Danielle and son-in-law, Scott.
