Ms. Deena Amont

The 2021-2022 school year marks my 20th year at Lawrence High School!  I was fortunate to land a student teaching placement at LHS in 2002, and even more fortunate to be offered a full time teaching position the following year.  I currently teach three-dimensional art, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry and art metals, and in the past I've taught graphic design, photography, industrial design, as well as other subjects.

My favorite thing about teaching is when you see that magical moment of insight and enlightenment on a person's face, when you realize they have experienced a learning breakthrough!

Prior to teaching high school, I worked in the field of adult education, developing seminars and workshops for professionals in the agricultural and horticultural industries. I often teach classes for kids and adults on ceramics, hand-dyeing, and other subjects at the Lawrence Arts Center.

Hobbies

When I am not teaching or creating art, I like to grow plants, create beautiful and delicious vegetarian meals, make all natural soaps, run and  practice yoga.

Education and Certifications

I received my Master's degree in visual arts education from the University of Kansas in 2008. I earned a Bachelor's degree in plant science and horticulture from Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey in 1987. I am proud to be a National Board Certified Teacher, earning my National Board Certification in 2011.

Art Experience

My speciality area in art is in ceramics. I have worked in clay since I was in high school, and my high school ceramics teacher, Eva Bouzard-Hui, was influential in my decision to become an art teacher later in my life. I studied art in college at Rutgers University, coincidentally with my high school teacher's husband, Ka Kwong Hui (1922-2003).
