January School Mail-Ballot Election: Mark it, Sign it and Mail it Back!
The Lawrence Board of Education will ask voters in January for approval to maintain current local school funding. Kansas enables school districts to supplement state aid by raising local funding of up to 31% of their General Fund. Last year, the Legislature granted school boards permission to increase local funding to 33%. The Lawrence school board approved the 2% increase this year to help offset a $2 million loss in state aid. That increase generated approx. $1.4 million, without increasing taxes, to support teachers and classroom instruction. State law requires voter approval, by mail ballot, to maintain current local school funding at 33%. Ballots will be mailed to all registered voters in USD 497 on January 7. Ballots must be marked, signed and returned to the Douglas County Clerk's Office by January 27. Public approval will NOTincrease local taxes. Without public approval, the school board must identify approx. $1.4 million in program cuts and/or reallocations. Find more information at www.usd497.org/Election.
