The Merc- Cooking Classes and More!

As part of the LPS Wellness Program, you are able to enroll in community Merc classes*, pay in full, and then receive a cash reimbursement directly from The Merc for the class fee (minus $5.00) on your day of attendance. It's that easy!

*Merc classes that are NOT eligible for LPS Wellness Program discount include:
  • Most Dessert classes
  • “Dinner with Class”
  • Alcohol-based classes
If you have any questions about a class qualifying for the LPS Wellness Program discount, please contact Shelley Lane, LPS Staff Wellness Coordinator, PRIOR to registering.


  • "French Food & Perfect Wine Pairings" on Wednesday, June 20th is NOT an LPS Wellness Program eligible class- no discount/reimbursement offered.
  • "Beer & Breakfast- Local Food and Craft Beer Pairings" on Friday, June 29th is NOT an LPS Wellness Program eligible class- no discount/reimbursement offered.
  • "Local Food & Local Wine" on Friday, July 6th is NOT an LPS Wellness Program eligible class- no discount/reimbursement offered.



Enrollment & Reimbursement is Easy:
        1) Register and pay at The Merc or mail payment to Community Mercantile, Attn: Nancy O'Connor, 901 Iowa, Lawrence, KS 66044
        2) Check the LPS employee box when completing a Merc Registration card found at The Merc or print and complete one of these Merc             Registration Cards
        3) Pay class fee in full (cash or check- made payable to Community Mercantile). Merc member and Senior (age 62 and older) discounts DO apply               to those eligible.
        4) You are now enrolled in the class. Mark your calender!
        5) When/if you attend the Merc class you will receive your reimbursement* (minus the nominal $5 fee you owe as part of the LPS Wellness             Program) directly from the lead class host at the Merc that evening. You will sign off at The Merc that your received cash reimbursement.
        
*Please note: There will be NO reimbursement if you “no show” or fail to notify The Merc of cancellation 48 hours prior to class. If you fail to give 48 hours notice of cancellation or “no show,” you will forfeit your full amount for the class and receive no reimbursement from The Merc or the LPS Wellness Program. NO EXCEPTIONS. *See the below ‘Unable to attend a class’ for more information.


Additional Information:

  • Unable to attend a class?
  • If you notify The Merc at 785-843-8544 within 48 hours of the class you will receive FULL credit toward another class in the future. The Merc can then appropriately utilize the wait list to replace your enrollment.
  • If you give less than 48 hours notice, you will forfeit your payment in full. Neither The Merc, nor the LPS Wellness Program will reimburse you for any amount of the class registration fee.
  • IMPORTANT- If have less than 48 hours notice, please find someone to serve as a substitute in your place. Out of courtesy to The Merc and class presenters, the class will be attended as anticipated. Your substitute needs to notify the host at check in that they are substituting for you.
  • First come, first serve enrollment. Classes fill quickly, so don’t delay!
  • You are officially "In” unless you hear otherwise once you have registered with payment. You will not receive any confirmation of your enrollment, so please mark your calendar for the class date and time. You will only be contacted if you are on the wait list.
  • Wait list. If your registration with payment is received and the class has already has reached maximum capacity of 31 participants, then the Merc will notify any extra enrollees of their status as being on the “wait list” and The Merc will contact you directly if there is a cancellation.
  • Registration deadline. Deadline for registration is 48 hours prior to class, as classes will be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met by 48 hours.
  • No Stand-by or Walk-ins. You must be pre-enroll in all classes.
  • Be on time. Doors open 20 minutes prior to the class start time.
  • Class cancellation policy:You will receive a call directly from The Merc if a class happens to be cancelled. This is a rare occurence. A full refund or class credit will be issued to you if the class is actually cancelled. They do attempt to reschedule classes, if at all possible. Do not assume a class is cancelled due to weather. Call The Merc if this is in question at 785-843-8544. You should speak with someone in the education department directly about this inquiry. If the weather is particularly bad and you do not feel comfortable driving into class that evening, IF you notify The Merc that day PRIOR to the class, you may receive class credit. If you fail to notify The Merc, you will not receive class credit.
