SSG70  Social Studies 7

This course teaches basic geographic themes, terms, concepts, and skills and examines world cultures.  The year begins with a physical geography unit; then the students "travel" around the world in 180 school days.  Unit studies include the United States, Latin America, Canada, Europe, Northern Eurasia, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, and the South Pacific.  Emphasis is not only on places and products but also on people and culture, world leaders, interdependence of nations, and current events.

SSH80  Social Studies 8

American history offers a chronological view of history from early times and exploration through the present.  With details and facts woven into unit themes to help students grasp the larger patterns of American history, the course emphasizes forging a national identity from a diverse population, broadening and strengthening our democratic institutions, and improving our economic and technical capacity.  Students will learn how to interpret and use maps; locate, organize and evaluate information; and apply knowledge of the past to current issues. Students will receive a nine-week course in Kansas History during the first semester.

SS900  Social Studies 9

Ninth grade social studies is a year-long, two-credit course required for high school graduation.  Topics covered in the first semester include the Constitution, federal government, the political process, and the law and civil liberties.  Units in the second semester include world government, careers, and economics.  At some time during the course, students participate in a two-week seminar on law enforcement taught by an officer from the Lawrence Police Department.
