Elementary Math in Lawrence Public Schools

Why doesn't the math my child brings home look like the math I remember?

If you don't recognize math in your child's homework, think about how the world has changed since you were in school.  The math looks different because the world is different.

Our students are learning math that reflects advances in science, technology, information processing and communications.  Their math will better prepare them for the changes that are taking place in today's workplace.

Math TrailBlazers, our K-5 mathematics program, focuses on those standards identified in the Kansas Standards for Mathematics - number, algebra, geometry and data - in addition to arithmetic skills.

You will find your child learning to -

  • solve "real-world" problems,
  • apply mathematics to science,
  • explain his or her thinking to others,
  • identify and analyze trends from data, and
  • use calculators.

Along with worksheets, your child will bring home math problems related to "real life" - calculating bank balances, conducting television surveys and analyzing data, for example - to investigate.
