Music

The study of music in the Lawrence Public Schools contributes in important ways to the quality of every student’s life.  Through singing, playing instruments, and composing students can express themselves creatively.  Instruction in music cultivates the whole child, gradually building literacy while developing intuition, reasoning, imagination and dexterity into a unique form of expression and communication.  The intellectual demands that the arts place on students help them develop problem-solving abilities and powerful thinking skills as analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating. Every student is enriched by the skills, knowledge and habits acquired in the study of music.

Students in USD 497 begin music instruction in the elementary music classroom.  Once in the 6th grade students can begin group instruction in instrumental music.  Choral music ensembles formally begin in the 7th grade.  Instrumental and choral ensembles continue in grades 7 – 12.  Additional music courses, including Music Theory are available to all high school students.
