School
for the latest information.

"Existing to educate and prepare all students
to function successfully in a global community."

Kennedy originally opened its doors in January of 1961 as Southeast Elementary School. By April of the same year, the Lawrence Board of Education unanimously voted to rename the "new" school, Kennedy Elementary School, in honor of Miss Opal Jayne Kennedy. Miss Kennedy retired as principal of Hillcrest Elementary School in 1961 after 50 years of teaching the children of Lawrence and Douglas County.

Since its opening, building expansions on the Kennedy campus have given our school a new look. The most recent change to Kennedy was in 2010, when early childhood students joined grades K-5. This blending of an early childhood center and elementary school is one of many aspects that make Kennedy Elementary unique!
