School Transfers/Reassignment Information

In the Lawrence Public Schools, school attendance is based on residential addresses within school boundary areas. However, parents and/or guardians may request a student transfer/reassignment within the district. At the elementary and junior-high level, transfers are considered for three reasons:

  1. School Preference
  2. Relocation
  3. Extenuating circumstance of a medical, legal or emergency nature

At the high-school level, a reassignment is considered for two reasons:

  1. Relocation
  2. Extenuating circumstance of a medical, legal or emergency nature

A transfer request form (elementary and junior high) or building assignment waiver form (high school) may be obtained from each school building, the Lawrence Public Schools' district office or you may access the form for the 2008-2009 school year online. Please complete the appropriate transfer/reassignment form and return the completed from to the Office of the Deputy Superintendent at the address on the top of the form.

If you have recently relocated and/or have an extenuating circumstance and you’d like to request a transfer/reassignment for the current school year (2007-2008), you may also access those forms from any school building, the Lawrence Public Schools' district office or online.

Transfers/reassignments are evaluated with consideration of building capacity, current enrollment, growth projections, boundary issues, renovation projects, teacher allocation (addition or reduction), class sizes and student’s behavior and attendance history.

The approval of a transfer does not guarantee future transfer/reassignment approval to the next feeder school.  Younger siblings are not guaranteed approval to the same school and will be evaluated at the time of their request.  Each request is considered on its individual merits.

Due to the varying time frames of when decisions will be made regarding transfer and reassignment requests, please review the specific forms for details.  Transfer limits have been set.  When limits are reached, grade levels and schools will be closed to transfers.

School principals may recommend to the Deputy Superintendent that transfers/reassignments be revoked due to disciplinary, attendance, and/or academic concerns.  The district does not provide transportation for students approved for a transfer/reassignment.  Transfer/reassignment requests are ultimately approved by the Deputy Superintendent.

If you need to speak with someone regarding a transfer/reassignment request, please contact Dawn Downing, Senior Administrative Assistant-Deputy Superintendent's Office, at (785) 832-5000 extension 1900.
