Assessment in Lawrence Public Schools

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) is administered to all students in grades Kindergarten through 9 in Mathematics. It is administered to all students in grades 3 through 9 in Reading. The box below, labeled MAP, contains more information about this assessment. MAP is administered 3 times per year: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Growth is measured from Fall to Spring and/or Fall to Fall.

Kansas Assessments of Reading and Mathematics are administered to all students in grades 3 through senior high school annually. The Kansas Assessments in Reading and Mathematics are used to determine proficiency on the Kansas Standards and to measure Adequate Yearly Progress under Federal Law "No Child Left Behind" (2002).

Kansas Assessment of Science is administered annually in grades 4, 7 and senior high school. Grades 4 and 7 are tested for proficiency in general science, and senior high students are tested for proficiency in Life Science and Physical Science. Performance on the Kansas Assessment of Science is one factor used to determine Quality Performance Accreditation (QPA).

Kansas Assessment of Social Studies (History/Government)  is administered every other year to students in grades 6, 8, and senior high school. Grades 6 and 8 are tested for proficiency in general social studies (American History, World History, and Kansas History), and senior high students are tested for proficiency in American History, World History, and Economics. Performance on the Kansas Assessment of Social Studies is one factor used to determine Quality Performance Accreditation (QPA).

Kansas Assessment of Writing is administered every other year (opposite social studies) to grades 5, 8 and 11. Grade 5 students produce a narrative written product, grade 8 students produce an expository written product, and grade 11 students produce a persuasive written product. The Kansas Writing Assessment is scored using the 6 +1Trait Writing (copyright: Education Northwest) rubric. Performance on the Kansas Assessment of Writing is one factor used to determine Quality Performance Accreditation (QPA).

Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early LIteracy Skills (DIBELS) is administered to all students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. The DIBELS measures were specifically designed to assess the Big Ideas of early literacy: Phonological Awareness, Alphabetic Principle, Fluency with Connected Text, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. The measures are linked to one another and have been found to be predictive of later reading proficiency. Combined, the measures form an assessment system of early literacy development that allows educators to readily and reliably determine student progress.

Lawrence Public Schools Mathematics Benchmark Assessments were field tested in grades 3 through 8 in 2011-12. These assessments are being designed to help teachers determine the progress of each student in the area of mathematics performance. More development on these assessments will take place during 2012-13.
