Lawrence Elementary School Facilities Vision Task Force
Executive Summary:
The Task Force reached consensus on several issues:
1. The status quo, 15 elementary schools in the present configuration, is not a viable option for the future.
2. Solely closing schools does not meet the Task Force’s charge. In addition to the consideration of closing schools, the Task Force should consider consolidating schools in east and central Lawrence.
3. District staff and architects should investigate all of the issues regarding the possible closing of Cordley, Pinckney and/or Wakarusa Valley for the 2011-12 school year, as well as issues associated with a long-range plan to possibly consolidate Hillcrest and Sunset Hill in central Lawrence and/or New York and Kennedy in east Lawrence.
The Task Force also discussed non-facility issues, such as English Language Learners, theme-based schools and boundaries.
The next meeting of the Task Force will be held at 5:30 p.m. on February 14 at the District Office, 110 McDonald Drive, prior to the regular meeting of the Lawrence Board of Education.
