I am humbled to serve as a member of the Board of Education for USD 497 and welcome your insights. My wife and I chose to move our family to Lawrence in no small part due to its strong public school system. With two children at Cordley Elementary, I get to witness the miracle of public education everyday. As an architect, I know the importance of having a powerful, inspiring, collective vision in decision-making. I believe that the district needs to focus on the academic achievement of all students in the district and prepare them with the lifelong, 21st century learning skills of: critical thinking, collaboration/communication, creativity, and self-sufficiency. The board needs to make decisions that are:
- Financially responsible
- Data-driven
- Informed by community participation
- Future sighted
- Aligned with the shared vision
Most importantly, in these difficult times when public education is under assault, it is important that all stakeholders work together to be respectful, strive for innovation, and be optimistic about our children’s future. I will strive to bring a positive influence to the district.
